😅 Stop Keeping Up with the EntrepreJonses + Doors for Momentum Close at Midnight!🌙

I’m elated to bring you another one of my favorite friendtors, Mike Michaelowicz. He’s the author of several books that have dramatically improved my business: Profit FirstClockwork, and now on today's Pivot Podcast we’re talking about his latest upcoming release, Fix This Next: Make the Vital Change that Will Level Up Your Business.

A few related notes:

REMINDER: MOMENTUM DOORS CLOSE AT MIDNIGHT!

As I shared earlier this week, I debated postponing the launch (one we’ve planned around since the end of 2019) but with all that’s going on, now is the time small businesses need community, smart systems, and support more than ever to weather this storm.

🦠 25 Favorite Tips for WFH + What It's Like 2 Weeks In to Self-Quarantine (Hint: Ditch the Pinterest-Worthy Pressure)

While it can seem distracting and disorienting at first, working from home is an incredible opportunity to tune into your circadian rhythms and exactly how you work best.

Even though your new commute may just be from the bed to the living room to the office, you can still create rituals and boundaries that set you up for success when you start the day, and sanity when you end it.

I've been podcasting almost daily this week; in today's episode I share 25 of my favorite tips from nine years of working from home, and yesterday I posted an interview with Lindsay in the Greater Seattle Area, who had a two-week head start on self-quarantine and generously shares the in-the-moment ups and downs of her experience so far.

  • If you work within an organization and have been asked to WFH: see below for the recording of yesterday's Pivot workshop—it's geared toward exactly this situation!

  • Reminder for Solopreneurs: Now is the time small businesses need community, smart systems, and support more than ever—friendly reminder that Momentum enrollment closes tomorrow, Friday March 20: Learn more and join us here » (If you still have questions before deciding, I'm doing a Q&A session today at 10am ET on Zoom)

🦠 PODCASTING: PIVOTING AROUND A PANDEMIC

Background on this series: We are all dealing with massive amounts of uncertainty, pivots at work, and for many, the fear and anxiety that comes with not only the health concerns, but questions around how to maintain our livelihoods moving forward.

When Momentum member and pandemic expert Dr. Michael J. Consuelos reached out to offer himself as a resource to the JBE team and the MoMo community, I jumped at the chance to record a conversation for all of you as well, which has now turned into a full-blown series:

WATCH THE RECORDING: MAP WHAT'S NEXT (PANDEMIC EDITION)

There's no way around it — every day brings a new mental, emotional, work rollercoaster. I scheduled a slew of complimentary trainings this month, including my main interactive keynote for individuals within organizations: Pivot—Map What's Next for the Year Ahead.

Feeling frazzled myself from the daily "snow globe shake-up" of work and life shifts (even our Whole Foods was almost entirely empty so we couldn't quite scrounge together dinner!), I debated cancelling — before I realized now is the time we must talk about pivoting and navigating daily uncertainty.

Watch the video recording from yesterday's workshop — we had great discussion on how to apply the Pivot Method in an environment where even one year out is too far to plan for right now. If you prefer, here's the audio-only and the chat transcript.

Check out these complimentary Pivot resources to deepen your Pivot planning:

Pivoting Around a Pandemic + 2 Live Webinars This Week

With so much happening in the world and global economy around coronavirus, we’re all dealing with massive amounts of uncertainty, pivots at work, and for many—fear and anxiety that comes not only with the health concerns, but questions around how to maintain our livelihoods moving forward.

Just yesterday, the recommendation has gone from avoiding gathering in groups larger than 50 to groups larger than 10. This is affecting all of us, and we are being asked to pivot and adapt to tremendous uncertainty on a daily basis, personally and professionally.

When Momentum member and pandemic expert Dr. Michael J. Consuelos reached out to offer himself as a resource to the JBE team and the MoMo community, I jumped at the chance.

There are now 3 Pivot Podcast episodes in our Pivoting Around a Pandemic series, with more to follow on a more frequent publishing schedule.

I'm using the emoji to indicates which episodes are related to the pandemic and more scrappy/in-the-moment, alongside regular Pivot Podcast programming for those of you who can't bear another item on the subject!

How can we know what actions to take? We can’t. These times require responsiveness, vulnerability, transparency, releasing perfectionism, and a willingness to be far more innovative and creative than we have in the past.

Ours is a wide-ranging, imperfect, in-the-moment response so we could at least start the conversation around how to maintain business continuity while Pivoting around a pandemic, primarily for those in information-based roles and industries.

MOMENTUM DOORS OPEN THIS WEEK

In odd, but maybe perfect timing for some of you, Momentum doors are now open for enrollment (3/17 - 3/20).

My team and I debated postponing the launch (one we’ve planned around since the end of 2019) but with all that’s going on, now is the time small businesses need community, smart systems, and support more than ever to weather this storm.

If you are looking to double-down on business-building while still doing so with calm, ease, sanity, crazy-smart systems, and an incredible community of heart-based solopreneurs, I would love for you to learn more and join us »

LEARN MORE: LIVE (VIRTUAL) PIVOT EVENTS THIS WEEK:

  • At 10am ET Today, Tuesday 3/17 I'm leading the 10 Scalable Streams of Solopreneur Income Masterclass (Register Here). I plan to talk through each stream of income as it relates to navigating a crisis and how well (or not) it performs in economic uncertainty and quite possibly recession. I'll also share how I'm approaching this "Black Swan" event as a small business owner.

  • Wednesday 3/18 at 12pm ET: Pivot—Map What's Next for the Year Ahead. If you've never attended one of my workshops, I encourage you to join us — I'll be sharing the Pivot Method as a framework for navigating change, which is more important now than ever. We may not even be able to plan for one year from now, but with so much fear and anxiety it's important to take a strengths-based approach: what is working? What does success look like? What can you try? Register here »

Pivoting Around a Pandemic + Two Live Workshops Today

With so much happening in the world and global economy around coronavirus, we’re all dealing with massive amounts of uncertainty, pivots at work, and for many—fear and anxiety that comes not only with the health concerns, but questions around how to maintain our livelihoods moving forward.

When Momentum member and pandemic expert Dr. Michael J. Consuelos reached out to offer himself as a resource to the JBE team and the MoMo community, I jumped at the chance to record a conversation for all of you as well.

In this special mid-week Pivot Podcast, we discuss how entrepreneurs, leaders and organizations can transition from fear and anxiety toward calm, measured action and experiments.

How can we know what actions to take? We can’t. These times require responsiveness, vulnerability, transparency, releasing perfectionism, and a willingness to be far more innovative and creative than we have in the past.

Michael and I talk about how to shift from victim to hero, how to quiet internal concerns, and small daily actions to focus on—as well as what organizations and entrepreneurs can we learn from each other during “Black Swan” events like these.

This is a wide-ranging, imperfect, in-the-moment response so we could at least start the conversation around how to maintain business continuity while Pivoting around a pandemic, primarily for people in information-based roles and industries — and both of us are open to an ongoing series on this topic if you find it helpful!

THIS WEEK'S FINDS AND FAVORITES . . .

  • Teaching: In addition to the live events today, on Tuesday 3/17 I'll be discussing how to diversify your Pivot Portfolio—also crucial during times of uncertainty. Register now for 10 Scalable Streams of Solopreneur Income »

  • Listening: Michael Pollan's latest, an Audible exclusive called Caffeine, is delightful! Especially if you have an on/off relationship with coffee like I do (up to six cups a day at my peak a few years ago)! Thankfully no longer, especially after I learned that the half-life of coffee means that a cup after 12pm can negatively affect your sleep.

For a preview, here's a great Fresh Air interview with him on Caffeine Cravings (and Why You Don't Have to Quit) »

  • Podcasting (and Gushing): I attended Oprah's 2020 Vision Tour: Your Life in Focus in Brooklyn last month — listen in to the full trip report on last week's Pivot Podcast »

  • Course for Solopreneurs: Have you enrolled yet in my—totally free!—mini-course, Free-up Founder Time? In 15 short actionable lessons, I cover topics like content batching, time blocking, getting ready for your big break, courage cookies, luck trucks, and a whole lot more. Each lesson as a combination of helpful tools, templates, podcast episodes, and book recommendations also available in audio format (most are 5-10 minutes long) for learning on the go.

  • Tool: For those of you looking to upgrade your branding, I find it helpful to tag sites and social graphics you like in Evernote (Web Clipper Chrome extension) or Pinterest. But a hidden tool you might not know about is the WhatFont Chrome extension — allows you to click the icon in your toolbar, then click on any font on a webpage and see what they're using.

Navigating Coronavirus Prep + It Doesn't Have To Be Crazy At Work

Who is starting Coronavirus emergency prep and supply shoppingAlmost all of the events I was set to speak at or attend in March and April have been cancelled or postponed, and even the ones that haven't have me debating whether or not it's smart to board a plane at this point.

I'm sending all my best thoughts to everyone in the extended Pivot community (and the planet!) to stay healthy during this uncertain time.

Now onto this week's PivotList and favorite finds 'round the web . . .

NEW PIVOT PODCAST:

What kind of company are you building (or working for)? Are you optimizing for chaos or for calm? One of my favorite books from recent years as it relates to company culture — even if you're a culture of one (or one+) — is It Doesn't Have to Be Crazy At Work, by Basecamp co-founders Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson.

Jason and David aim for a calm company, so every chapter (and business area) is about asking the question: How do we create calm? How do we choose calm?

This episode is preview lesson from my—totally free!—mini-course, Free-up Founder Time. After you listen, register for the course here — in 15 short actionable lessons, I cover topics like content batching, time blocking, getting ready for your big break, courage cookies, luck trucks, and a whole lot more. THIS WEEK'S FINDS AND FAVORITES . . .

  • Featured: I had a great time chatting with longtime friend and Pivot Coach Lisa Lewis for her Career Clarity Show podcast

  • ListeningPresent Company Podcast (iTunes Link): "Present Company with Krista Smith is a weekly show bringing you dynamic conversations with the exceptional people behind your favorite shows, films, specials, and documentaries." — the episodes with Demi Moore and Scarlet Johansson

  • Reading: Speaking of Demi Moore, I'm diving in to her Memoir, Inside Out, and she's had quite a journey — starting with bipolar parents in a love-hate-on-off relationship that involved moving 40 times as a child, with lack of supervision and an early realization that she had to fend for herself even as a kid.

  • Podcasting: Listen to the latest Pivot Podcast, "It Doesn't Have To Be Crazy At Work" (Free-Up Founder Time Excerpt) »

  • Tool: Need help creating beautiful presentations without all the rigamarole of typical design or presentation software, particularly if you're not a visual thinker? Let yourself be as surprised and delighted as I was to discover Beautiful.ai! (h/t Momentum founding member Linda Warner)

Tipping Points and Pivoting out of the CEO Role — With one of my greatest mentors, MBS

I’m so excited to share this week’s Pivot conversation with one of my longtime friends and most important mentors, Michael Bungay Stanier.

We talk about tipping points, preparing for TED Talks, and recently transitioning out of the CEO role from the company he founded nearly 20 years ago, Box of Crayons. We are also celebrating the launch of his latest brilliant book! The Advice Trap: Be Humble, Stay Curious, and Change the Way You Lead Forever.

FAVORITE FINDS 'ROUND THE WEB:

  • Featured: I had a blast chatting with Momentum Member Sarah Santacroce for her Gentle Business Revolution podcast. It's a show for "entrepreneurs who are tired of the old, hypey marketing and are looking for a better way to market their business." We talk about designing a launch you love as well as creating systems and content that live on long after the launch. Listen here »

  • ListeningWeCrashed - I mentioned this in an earlier #PivotList, but now that 5 of 6 episodes in the series are released, it really is a fascinating breakdown of the recent WeWork IPO debacle. On a related note, check out the podcast Spectacular Failures — I suggest starting with the episode on Toys R' Us going bust

  • Watching: The Boys on Amazon Prime is an engaging, dystopian take on all-too-human superheroes corrupted by capitalism. A bit gruesome at times (too much for my taste), the larger themes of mis-aligned interests and corroded values are thought-provoking and displayed in quite a creative context.

  • Tool: Amazon's Send to Kindle feature if you're not already using it! They now have web browser extensions in addition to the Kindle email address (which is what I use most regularly to forward PDFs for reading on-the-go).

That's it for now . . . THANK YOU for reading and listening, for your support, and for being part of this adventure with me. I am grateful for you every day, and I'm excited to see what 2020 brings!

Becoming a Successful Speaker + Upcoming (Virtual) Pivot Workshops

This week's Pivot podcast episode was recorded while on the road, preparing to speak at the International Monetary Fund to help them kick-off new career programs for 2020 (an honor!).

Thankful for a quiet hotel room all to myself in the midst of puppy-training (semi)chaos, I stacked a call with my attorney for a licensing contract, then recorded this interview and two solo shows — true to this week’s topic of navigating life as a professional speaker!

Grant and I discuss guidance from his new book, The Successful Speaker: Simple Steps to Make a Living Off Your Message, on everything from pricing, to outreach, to navigating life on the road.

  • Tool: For highly sensitive types like me, room noise can be a real distraction (and quite distressing if you're trying to carry on a conversation!). I was delighted to find the SoundPrint app via The New Yorker's feature, Yelp for Noise.

After you run a 15-second room noise detection, you can upload the data to share with other SoundPrinters. And feel redeemed knowing you're not crazy if the room level reads LOUD 🤪

Let's Hang Out! Upcoming Pivot and Momentum Workshops (All Free :)

This week on the Pivot Podcast I share more about life (and mini existential crisis moments!) two months in to the puppy-training trenches, along with a round-up of Ryder's Favorite Things (the best books, toys, treats, and tools we've discovered).

Dog-lovers/owners: any must-haves that we're missing?

I also wanted to let you know about a whole slew of upcoming free Pivot and Momentum virtual workshops in March!

I do about 30-40 keynote speaking engagements per year for companies, but I'm not as good at taking the initiative to host my own free in-person or online events (trying to fill seats is a business Achilles heel of mine for paid events). • Tool: From Momentum Member Leanne Hughes, host of the First Time Facilitator podcast: "I've signed up for Bonjoro and am LOVING it. You can send super quick, videos to thank your colleagues. It takes no time at all. I have cranked out 20 'thank you' videos in the last 30 mins. Simply recorded from my phone, tapped in their email address, thanked them for something specific...then recorded the next one."

The Coaching Session that Changed My Life

In 2007, while working within Sheryl Sandberg’s Online Sales and Operations organization at Google, I received a coaching session that changed my life. This was before the word coaching (and careers revolving around it) was ubiquitous outside of the sports arena.

In this week's Pivot Podcast I share more about how that one session helped spark a movement that’s still alive within Google today: an internal “drop-in” coaching program—to make coaching accessible, easy to sign up for, and free—for all employees at all levels of the company. I also walk through the big themes and mechanics of how to set this up if you’re hoping to run a pilot within your organization.

Shoutout to Denny Clark for submitting the Listener Q&A that inspired this episode!

  • Watching: GUILTY AS CHARGED, I love Love Island (Hulu). There, I said it! The ultimate guilty pleasure . . . but only the UK version! The U.S. spinoff is rubbish. This NYT article is what got me hooked in the first place . . . reader beware! If It's On Love Island, Britain Is Talking About It

  • Reading: I've done various future-self visioning and letter-writing exercises throughout my life, but Ann Napolitano's account takes the cake! I loved reading about her journey and reflections as she writes to her future self—and reads from her past self—every ten years :)

  • Listening: Robinhood Financial's Snacks Daily podcast — quick, punchy tech and business news. I listen on 2X so it's perfect for morning coffee or tea-making :)

🙋🏻‍♀️ Greetings from the Puppy-Training Trenches! Favorite Finds (and Pics :) Inside

Happy New Year!! Any "Curb" fans out there cringing at how late I am to offer the greeting? ;-) I'm in Washington, DC at the moment, looking forward to delivering a Pivot keynote and panel at the International Monetary Fund later today.

I haven't sent a #PivotList round-up since December, just before our little angel-in-fur-coat Ryder arrived — aka the pup-pup. Take one look at his 8-week old cuteness below and you'll understand why! (For inquiring minds, he's a German Shepherd—albeit a tiny one in this photo :)

I also didn't start 2020 on a particularly graceful note . . . awoke at 4am on January 1 to throw on all my winter gear (including The Comfy), take him downstairs . . . and clean-up doggie diarrhea (sorry, I know that's graphic). Long story short: these last two months have been incredibly joyful AND I felt I was losing my mind at many moments!

Stay tuned for a solo episode of the Pivot Podcast coming up next week where I share what it's been like so far, and all the best books and resources I've been relying on. These two articles also provided a lot of consolation on the chaos! Having Kids by Paul Graham, and Puppies are Harder Than Babies (h/t Adam).

Last gratuitous pic (for now!): Here's Ryder last week, at 4 months old — as our neighbors here in Harlem say daily (we make so many friends now!), "Look at those paws! He's gonna be BIIIIIG!"
